 VOLUNTEER YOUR SERVICE

We are creating a robust, interdisciplinary team. We seek to improve our ability to address the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of our patients and their families. For this to happen we need the contributions of committed volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to lend their time and talents to develop and bolster many areas of our program. Areas where you might contribute include:

  1. Patient Companion Sitters: Available to provide quiet presence to patients who are alone, or to provide relief to family members.

  2. Hands-on Patient Care Aides: Undergo training which enables them to help nurses with bathing and feeding of patients.

  3. Volunteer Coordinators: Help us to organize our volunteer programs and train volunteers.

  4. Development Coordinators: Help guide us in raising funds.

  5. Graphic Artists and Writers: Develop informational resources for patients, families and the public.

  6. Notaries: Enable bed-bound patients to sign legal documents.

  7. Volunteer Clergy: Visit our hospitalized patients.

For more information, please contact Johanna Braden, RN, CHPN, Clinical Coordinator, Palliative Care Service at jbraden@virginiahospitalcenter.com or 703-558-5291.

 PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Our patients and their families need help to cope with the stresses imposed by severe illness and hospitalization. Monetary gifts pay for items large and small. We need funds to pay for headphone amplifiers for hard of hearing patients; a blanket warmer; refurbishing of a family room; art therapy projects; and ultimately, the creation of a dedicated palliative care unit. We would also like to develop an endowment to fund a grief counselor and other psychological and psychiatric staff.

Financial gifts may be made as tax-deductible contributions through the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation:
http://www.virginiahospitalcenter.com/giving/ways_to_give.aspx

You may also email the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation at
foundation@virginiahospitalcenter.com , or call 703.717.GIFT (4438).

Please indicate that you wish your contribution to go toward the needs of the palliative care program. In addition to the staff at the VHC Foundation, inquiries may be directed to Johanna Braden, RN
at jbraden@virginiahospitalcenter.com or
Loren Friedman, MD at lfriedman@arlingtonpal.net

 SPREAD THE WORD

Many people—both among the general public and even in healthcare—have little or no awareness of the services provided by the Palliative Care Team. If you have been helped by our services, please let others know. Your support of our efforts enables us to continue and expand our programs. We would also appreciate any constructive comments which would help us to improve our care of patients and families.

 DREAMS: PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT

At present we provide our services throughout all nursing units at Virginia Hospital Center. Many hospitals in the United States, including the Harry Horovitz Center for Palliative Care at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, the Hertzberg Center for Palliative Care at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, and the Thomas Palliative Care Unit at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital in Richmond have dedicated palliative care units where the special needs of patients with life-limiting illness may be better addressed. These specially furnished and staffed units exist only when major benefactors have the vision to address the needs of palliative care patients. In the years ahead, we hope to have the resources to become the first hospital in Northern Virginia to develop a Palliative Care Unit.
